A small diversion
Catstatic
Press and drag the cat across the carpet. Friction charges his fur until it is standing on end, and charged fur holds balloons — the expensive colours need more of it than the cheap ones. The charge leaks away the moment you leave the rug, so the room is a route rather than a playground. Nine rooms, one clock, and the seconds you save are worth more than the balloons.
Charging. Only carpet charges you, and only while you are actually moving across it — parking on a rug does nothing. Shag charges roughly twice as fast as an ordinary rug, and a thin mat is slower than either. The charge always leaks, so a charged cat is a temporary cat. Balloons cost charge to pick up, and the colour is the price. Roughly one in five has something rattling about inside it. Collected balloons ride above you on strings and pull you upward, so a full cat steers like a balloon himself. The radiators are grounded — touch one while charged and the lot goes to earth in a bang, costing you the meter and a second off the clock. Lightning rods hand you a full charge if you stand under one and keep working, but the wind‑up leaves you standing still. Scoring pays the seconds you did not spend on a room, multiplied by the room number, so a brisk room is worth more than the balloons in it. The scissors cut two balloons loose and cost you two seconds; they get quicker every room, and a second pair joins later on. The magnet pulls harder the more charged you are.
