Brush right across a snarl, along the arrows drawn on it, with the tool matching its colour. Every stroke kicks the grain a new way and warms the snarl up, so work one for a few pulls and move on while it cools.

Fluff: loose and airy, wants the wide brush
Mat: dense and felted, wants the fine comb
Burr: full of debris, wants the rubber mitt
